Schlage Encode for Airbnb hosts: one lock, codes for every guest.

The Schlage Encode is one of the locks Airbnb connects to directly in the US and Canada. Here is what it does, how Airbnb’s integration works with it, and how guests who book on your own site get a code too.

Schlage Sense is a different lock: Airbnb lists the Sense Pro, but Seam, the device platform Smart Stay uses, doesn’t support Schlage Sense. For a rental that also takes direct bookings, the Encode or Encode Plus is the safer choice.

Airbnb’s integration with Schlage

Airbnb’s help center lists the Schlage Encode Plus Smart WiFi Deadbolt, the Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt and the Encode Smart WiFi Lever among compatible locks. It works for listings in the US and Canada, one lock per listing. Once connected, Airbnb generates a unique code for each guest, shares it with them, activates it for the stay and deactivates it after checkout. Guests’ codes can’t be changed or customized.

Airbnb says it never sees the codes on your lock and never changes the personal codes you added. If you delete a guest’s code in the Schlage app, Airbnb generates a new one and shares it with the guest.

And guests who book on your own site?

Airbnb’s integration only knows about Airbnb bookings. A guest who books on your website, or through Booking.com, gets nothing from it. With Smart Stay on a No Effort Rentals site:

  • For every confirmed booking on your site, it creates a 6-digit door code that works from check-in to checkout, local time.
  • It emails the code to the guest three days before arrival, from your site, under your name.
  • It moves or removes the code when the booking is changed or canceled, and the code stops working at checkout.
  • It tells you before the next arrival if a lock is offline or its battery is low.
  • For Airbnb and Booking.com stays it can also make codes from the synced calendar, if you turn it on per property; you then send the code through the platform’s chat, because calendars don’t carry guest contacts.

Running both on one lock

The simple setup: let Airbnb make codes for Airbnb stays, and let Smart Stay make codes for direct bookings only. In Smart Stay, codes for imported Airbnb stays are off by default for exactly this reason: two systems making codes for the same stay would only confuse the guest.

Keep an eye on capacity: the Encode holds up to 100 codes, your own and the cleaner’s included, which is plenty for one home.

Setup checklist

  1. Install the lock and connect it to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi in the Schlage Home app.
  2. Add your own code and a cleaner’s code, and note them somewhere safe.
  3. If you host on Airbnb in the US or Canada, connect the lock in Airbnb’s smart lock settings.
  4. In Smart Stay, connect your Schlage account, assign the lock to the property and check its time zone.
  5. Make a test booking on your site and watch the code appear.
